Thomas Brier

Software Engineer

In EVE since: 2026-03

Thomas Brier is a software engineer in the EVE group at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH).

Tom completed his degree in Mathematics & Computer Science (BSc) at the University of Birmingham in the UK. Shortly after graduating, he began a job there as a software engineer in the School of Biosciences, working on the CLIMB (Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics) project.

During his time there, he helped to maintain existing systems used as part of the UK’s SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance effort. As well as this, he built Onyx, a sample metadata database that contributes to new genomic surveillance efforts in the UK such as the mSCAPE metagenomics surveillance platform.

Tom’s passion for open-source public health software led him to join the EVE lab, where he now works as a software engineer on the database software Loculus and the genomic data sharing and analysis platform Pathoplexus, as part of the ARTIC2 project.
